Employment and Skills

Welland is working to influence learning and skills providers in the development of long term strategies, provision and learning networks to address skills gaps and recruitment issues as well as links to the innovation agenda.

Raising the demand for higher skills as well as tackling supply issues is key to a successful economy. A highly skilled population able to access local high paid quality jobs is a fundamental aim of The Welland SSP

Improvements in business productivity are being tackled through investment in management and leadership and enterprise, notably programes such as Delivering Business Skills Excellence and the Sirius Business Transformation programme.

An initial Rutland-based Sirius pilot programme recruited eight companies whose forecast of combined increased revenue went up from £50m to a minimum of £80m within two years, and quadrupled profits from a total £1.9 to over £8m.

The skills agenda links directly to Welland’s overall Business Growth programme, one new aspect of which is development funding for small businesses capable of significant growth and increased employment.

Investing in Graduate Recruitment programmes is helping not only to raise level skills within businesses but also to encourage young graduates to think of SMEs as a key employment opportunity. Attracting these highly skilled young people back to the area is an economic necessity and will support our innovation programme area.

The Welland SSP will also work with key partners to ensure that all young people are able to achieve their maximum potential and can better access high quality local employment and training.

Key issues:

  • Skills levels in businesses and low paid local employment
  • Graduate employment to help retain young people and boost skills in SMEs
  • Barriers of cost and distance to access quality training, childcare issues
  • Access to information, advice and brokerage
  • Lack of opportunities to access quality vocational training and employment
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Recruitment issues
  • Migrant labour
  • Limited skills development opportunities for older people, women and part-time workers
