Rural Development

The Welland SSP has a proven track record in both the development of its market towns and wider rural diversification and development

It is now working to ensure that enterprise information, innovation opportunities and business support are available across towns, villages and rural communities to a level previously only available in urban areas.

A successful Redundant Rural Buildings programme is restoring economic life to a growing number of unoccupied buildings, creating light manufacturing units, tourist accommodation, office space - and even a Montessori School and a conferencing centre

Stamford Vision continues to re-energise the historic core of Stamford, England’s finest stone town and at grass roots level the SSP Community Catalyst funding has created pockets of enterprise and activity across the region, from village play areas to booksacks into schools.

Rural crime has been at the forefront of a dual programme of cross border crime intelligence and rural crime reduction, through innovative partnership working between three police forces.

The SSP has been at the forefront of developments in renewable energy through its association with Rural Energy Trust to promote supply development and stimulate consumer demand.

Rural development is a cross cutting issue with every other aspect of SSP activity, joining town to village and the agricultural hinterland, encouraging farm diversification, renewable energy, new farming crops and new ideas

Key Issues:

  1. Potential for sustainable energy and recycling programmes
  2. Strategic investment in market towns as economic and social hubs
  3. Support for community safety and health initiatives
  4. Access & Enterprise centres as local and sub-regional hubs
  5. Capacity building within the voluntary sector
Underused resources / brownfield land and vacant town centre floor space
